Experian Dispute

Ways to dispute your credit report

In the United States, there are three major credit bureaus; Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Each of these bureaus issues a credit report for people who wish to obtain loans for any reason. If you wish to file an Experian dispute, you can request a credit report from all of them.

In some cases, you might find misreported information such as a debt account. This kind of information will usually lower your credit score. Thus, you will need credit repair to correct such information and improve your credit score. To do this, you need to file a dispute.
Disputes for each bureau are different. For a TransUnion dispute or an Equifax dispute, the easiest way is to do it online. However, for an Experian dispute, there are three methods. These include:

Ways to dispute your credit report

Online Experian dispute

No doubt that online disputing is the easiest way of all. It is a free service that only requires creating an account on the Experian website.

Create an Experian account

To do so, you just need to open the website and go to the Dispute Center. If you already have an account, your credit report will appear immediately. If not, you need to register for a new account just like any online service.

View the credit report: Once you have an account, you can access your credit report and read all the information there. Check thoroughly all that you will need to dispute before filing the supporting documentation.

Start the dispute: To begin the Experian dispute process, click on “Start a new dispute”. Then, select the items you need to be revised. You need to provide valid reasons for each item. Further, you can dispute any number of items in your credit report. The only condition is to have reasons for challenging these items. You may also need to provide some documentation that proves your arguments.

Send the dispute

After you have written everything, submit your dispute. Once the dispute is confirmed, expect to receive an email from Experian indicating that they are processing your dispute. Also, they may send you emails updating you about the results of your dispute throughout the process. Alternatively, you can check your Experian dispute status on the website.

Follow the dispute status

When the dispute ends, it will appear in the “Completed” disputes in the Dispute Center on the website. There, you can know the result of your dispute, which takes around 30 days. If the dispute was refused, unfortunately, you won’t be able to remove this item from your credit report immediately.

Mail Experian dispute

Some people prefer the old-fashioned dispute processes. If you are one of those people, Experian offers a dispute mailing option. You can send them a dispute letter at P.O. Box 4500, Allen, TX 75013. However, there is a format you need to follow. So, check their website first before sending your dispute.

Generally, the letter you write should include your identification information, social security number, and your dispute arguments. Experian requires certain identification information. So, we recommend you follow their form to avoid missing any information that may slow down the process.

Once you send them the letter, they will take about 30 days to process your dispute. Then, they will reply to you via the mail.

Phone dispute

Experian disputes via phone are available, however, it is not the best method to follow. You can call Experian at 866-200-6020 and ask for a credit dispute. Yet, any dispute process needs documentation. So, you will eventually use mail or online methods to complete the dispute process.

Thus, to cut it short from the beginning, we recommend using one of the two other methods. Use the phone service if you only need to ask about something and want an immediate answer.

Expected results of the Experian dispute

After you are done with your dispute process; the company will either accept or refuse your dispute. If your dispute is accepted, then the information will be corrected and your credit report will be updated. On the other hand, if the dispute was rejected, the disputed item will remain on the report. However, you still have other options.

  • Repeat the Experian dispute: The first option is to repeat the same Experian dispute process again. You can follow the same processes you followed in your first dispute if you have new counterarguments. Although the process may take time, you should try again if you think your arguments are valid.
  • Contact the creditor: The second option is contacting the creditor and disputing the debt with them. The creditor may be a bank or any financial or utility organization. Alternatively, they might have sold the debt to a debt collection agency. So, you will need to start another dispute process with that agency. You can seek our help here at 007 Credit Agent to help with negotiating debt with a debt collection agency.
  • Add a statement:  Finally, if you failed in both previous steps, the remaining option is to add a statement to your credit report. In this statement, you will explain your arguments that failed to convince Experian agents. This statement will be attached to your credit report. So, whenever you request a loan and the lender requests your credit score and report, they will see this statement.
